Soft tip dartboards are in general electronic dartboards made of plastic segments with pre-molded holes designed to hold soft tip darts. These dartboards often come with scoring displays and voice prompts features, making it easier for amateur players to keep track of their scores and know where their next darts should land. It was innovated in the 80s and became popular in the later days.

The segments on the soft tip dartboard are designed with numerous holes and guide slopes around them. These slopes help the soft tip darts slide into the corresponding area, reducing the chances of bounce-outs. Well designed segment built with quality materials will have minimized bounce outs.

Soft tip darts are generally lighter weight than steel tip darts. Commonly used barrel weights are 14 to 20 grams that is more forgiving and easier to learn for beginners. Steel tip darts are much heavier ranging from 20 to 30 grams.

Soft tip is considered safer than steel tip. The molded plastic tip has the tendency to deform when it hits. There is less chance to cause injury to people around and wall damage during play. In contrast, the sharp steel tips can cause more significant injuries and damage for beginners and in family setting.
